Coronavirus update: Seven weeks on and still going strong

Update as of: 7/5/2020

As lockdown continues Newbigin Community trust has continued to try and come up with creative ways to supporting our community.

Since 19th March we have delivered 504 food parcels and 370 hot meals to families and individuals in our neighbourhood. The Newbigin Team have partnered with Megan Tucker the Oasis Hub leader Sarah Bruce from BVSC ,and 9 local volunteers to make this possible, by either delivering, cooking or baking food.

In the last 4 weeks the volunteers have been making up craft packs for us to distribute with the food deliveries to children in the local area and so far, we have delivered 422 craft packs.

We have also been inundated with emergency advocacy appointments, where we help individuals with problems regarding their housing/universal credit/EU settlement etc. Since 14th April we have had over 40 advocacy appointments, some over the phone and some face-to-face advocacy appointments for more complex issues remaining 2.5m apart in our outdoor office space (yurt). We have seen three people successfully housed this last week, and 1 eviction stopped, as well as other advocacy tasks completed.

Overall, we have reached 291 individuals (130 adults, 161 children) from 103 households in Winson Green/Handsworth area. Next week we are going to start planning for how best to support families and individuals as lockdown starts to ease up and we work towards reintegration and social support strategies for the most isolated and vulnerable members of our community.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us financially, by volunteering and with your prayers!
